Eukarya: The Cell & the City

In early 2017, the WbML began a major collaboration with the USC Bridge Institute at the Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience in USC’s Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, with additional support from Havas XVIII, to create a fully experiential virtual world in a single cell, in which metaphors inspired by cellular biology and those inspired by complex, urban systems are hybridized. The goal of this project is to use storytelling and world building to present scientific detail in ways that are engaging and approachable for both laymen and experts.

The Demand 

The team was looking for developing their online project on Cargo Collective, and they needed custom web solutions for the specific design in mind wokring to a short deadline. 

 

The Solution

With a UX approach, we implemented custom codes (CSS/JavaScript/HTML) to create dynamic effects and interactive navigation solutions. 

 


 

Dynamic Interaction

The designed constituents for the projects are modeled in 3D, and  the viewers would understand the structures the best if they would be able to see it in different angles. Thus in the constituent page we came up with the rotating feature when hovering over each item. The green dots on bottom left are indicator of the VR-built feature for certain constituents.

Customized Linking Symbols

Instead of going with classic menu structure (bar and burger), we decided to use custom designed symbols for navigation from page to page, resembeling the experience of exploring within a cell.
